noun / THER-muh-kul-cher /

  1. The practice of moving through heat, cooling, and rest with attention to the body, the place, and the people around you.
  2. The culture that grows around that practice: the rooms we build, the rituals we share, and the reasons we return.
  3. The company bringing that way of life into spaces, experiences, and gear made for the practice.

ORIGIN / COSTA RICA

A name born outside.

Therma (heat) + culture (what we cultivate together).

Founder John Pederson coined the name while exploring permaculture design in Costa Rica. Among mountains, rainforest rivers, waterfalls, and natural bathing places, he saw a connection: the health of people, places, and communities could be cultivated together.

That idea took shape through Stokeyard Outfitters, 612 Sauna Society, guided sessions at Hewing Hotel, and the Sauna Village. Building the rooms and hosting the gatherings became one practice.

Thermaculture gives a name to our approach, drawing on the many distinct bathing traditions that came before it.

The name today

What began as a name for an idea became a company built around a way of life. Today, Thermaculture designs and builds saunas, creates guided experiences, trains guides, and develops gear for life around the heat.

The thread through it all is simple: spend time outside, pay attention to your body, and make room for one another. Let the practice become part of ordinary life. A weekly gathering. A pause in the weather. A place you return to.

Our name brings the work together, from the materials in a room to the welcome at the door and the layer you pull on afterward. We want each to make it easier to take part and keep coming back.

What we stand for

Care for the body
Listen before pushing. Make room for rest. Build a practice you can return to.
Care for the place
Choose materials thoughtfully. Build for repeated use. Pay attention to what a place asks of us and what we leave behind.
Care for one another
Make the bench welcoming. Share what you learn. Leave space for different ways of taking part.

These values come to life through the choices we make, and through everyone who brings their own reasons to the bench.
